Portland Fleet Week 2011

Portland Fleet Week takes place every year in the month of June, at the same time as the Portland Rose Festival, and is planned this year from June 8, 2011 – June 12,2011 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon.

Every year for Portland Fleet Week, Navy ships dock in Portland and the ships’ Sailors get a much needed shore leave, and fan out across the city. In addition, there are U.S. Coast Guard ships and Guardsmen, and U.S. Marines on leave as well. Some years there are also naval ships from other countries like Canada or Great Britain that take part in Portland Fleet Week as well.

Navy Fleet Weeks

There is a great tradition of our Navy’s ships docking in U.S. ports so sailors can take shore leave, which over the years has turned into a homecoming celebration that takes over the whole city with events, parades, parties and concerts.

This post will grow and change over time, so be sure to check back frequently.  We’ll explore the history and traditions of Fleet Week, and also look at how each port city welcomes the ships and Sailors and the celebrations and events they hold.
